 Our  Wee Ups and Downs group provides programming and events    specifically for families with infants and young children with Down syndrome.


Splash Pad July 20

Play Date September 21

 We’re having a play date! Saturday, September 21st  from 10:00 am -12:00 pm in the preschool room at Holly Community Centre, Barrie.

Come dressed for Indoor and outdoor play, weather permitting, and bring a nut-free snack.

Cost: free! The rental fee for the facility will be covered by the DSASC.

Summer Programs


       LEARN TO RIDE A BIKE CAMP

We are very excited to learn that Barrie is one of the 3 places in Canada this year that will be hosting a “Learn to Ride a Bike Camp” through the organi-zation “I Can Shine” (previously known as Lose the Training Wheels) According to CDSS, only 10% of people with Down Syndrome can ride a bicycle. This program provides the 1 to 1 support to make riding a reality! The camp day is between the hours of 8am and 6pm. Your child will ride for 75min every day for 5 days (Mon-Friday)



DSASC WILL BE PROVIDING BURSARIES FOR THIS PROGRAM.

REQUIREMENTS: minimum 8yrs or older with 40” minimum height to fit the smallest roller bike. (an inseam of 20”)

Friends Camp: August 19-23rd


Who: Children starting JK in the
Fall, up to age 12
Where: Westminster Presbyterian Church, Barrie
When: August 19-23, 2013. Half day 9am-12pm
How much: $150

This inclusive camp program is geared towards children with Down syndrome, ASD or other exceptionalities, and their friends and siblings, to offer a way for them to participate in the important social opportunity of summer camp.
 
While having fun, young children will also be getting ready for school situations like circle time, raising their hands, lining up, play time, eating snacks with their peers, and introducing themselves to classmates. Campers will have the chance to explore themed activities like story time with Pete the Cat, singing, drumming, creative movement, sensory play, and outdoor games. Activities and games are designed to promote confidence, self-control, relating to others, communication, and cooperation. Two camp leaders and multiple volunteers will offer adequate support.

Dance

WHO:
Individuals  with Down syndrome ages 5yrs + and their siblings

WHERE:
Moving Art Studio, 125 Anne St. S
Barrie

WHEN:
Fridays 6:15-7:00 pm
(8 weeks, starting Sept, dates TBD)

COST:
$100/registrant  - Fee payable to "Moving Art"
(subsidy may be provided once DSASC fundraising completed)

Rock Star Program

WHO:
Individuals with Down syndrome ages 8yrs and up

WHERE:
Music Therapy Services of Simcoe County, 149 Welham Road Barrie

WHEN:
Saturdays 12:30-1:15 (10 weeks: Sept 28th-Nov 30th)
(if there is enough interest a Wed night class will run as well)

COST:
$225 payable to Heidi Flynn for 10 weeks
(subsidy will be dependant on DSASC fundraising )

ACTIVITIES:
This interactive musical program will teach basic music concepts. Creativity, cooperation and teamwork skills are reinforced in this program.

WHO and WHEN:

Tuesdays (10 weeks Sept 24 until Nov 26)
Siblings and parents may register as well if spots are still available

5-6 pm: pre-walking age group
(parent required to participate)
6-7 pm: Young children
(parents required to stay on site for toileting and safety issues)
7-8 pm: Beginner yoga
8-9 pm: Teen/adult yoga

CLASS SIZE:
minimum 3 maximum 6

COST:
$100/ registrant (Yoga mats are supplied)

WHO:

WHERE:
Speak Freely Therapy Services, 149 Welham Road, Barrie

WHEN:
Thursdays 6:15-7:25 (10 weeks starting September 26)

COST:
$400 payable to Speak Freely for 10 weeks
(subsidy may be provided once DSASC fundraising completed)

Individuals with Down syndrome ages 6 mos - 6 yrs

WHERE:
Music Therapy Services of Simcoe County, 149 Welham Road Barrie

WHEN:
Saturdays 10:15-10:45 ( Sept 28th-Nov 16th)

COST:
$120+tax for 8 weeks
 $65+tax for additional siblings under 6.(subsidy may be provided once DSASC fundraising completed)

ACTIVITIES:
This parent participation program will provide toddlers with an enriching musical experience that encourages vocalizing/singing, moving to music, and playing instruments.  Programming will be adapted to the abilities of participants.
